Germantown Meeting History:
The 1688 Quaker Petition Against Slavery
In 1688 four Germantown Quakers wrote a petition protesting the
use of slaves. It was the first public document that called for
universal human rights, and laid the foundation for the US
Declaration of Independence and the abolition movement. Recently
the GMM Working Group on the 1688 Petition created a poster
explaining the document and its background. Click here to download the poster (6 MB) and an introductory
text.
The HABS report on GMM Meeting House
In 2001 the National Park Service in its continuing survey
on Historic Buildings (HABS) made a report on the GMM Meeting House
