GERMANTOWN FRIENDS SCHOOL (GFS) NEWS & EVENTS

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE A MIDDLE SCHOOLER! STEWARDSHIP & SUSTAINABILITY

The GFS Seventh Grade Service Collaborative, one of the Middle School’s Signature Programs, explores important social issues including food insecurity, housing justice, and environmental stewardship, and helps them channel their energy into interactive discussions and solutions-oriented community engagement projects.

Middle School English and history teacher, Hannah Jacoby-Rupp explains that understanding Stewardship “best illustrates how all of the topics are related: when we look at a map, neighborhoods most impacted by environmental issues are also most likely to be food deserts and most affected by housing shortages.”  The program empowers these students to recognize their ability to impact the world and issues around them.

OPPOSE WAR WITH IRAN! Tell your Senator and Congressperson

From GMM Member Bill Cozzens — Yesterday,  I called both our Senators and my congressperson, Dwight Evans, to express my unequivocal opposition to the US involvement in Israel's war on Iran, being undertaken using the pretext that Iran is about to have a nuclear weapon. I will do so again tomorrow, when it is possible that someone will answer the phone. And again, on Monday! I urge all Friends to do the same. As Friends we must act in accordance with our most fundamental Peace testimony.

For the US to engage directly in war our Constitution requires that Congress declare war. Over the past 30 years US administrations have circumvented this constitutional requirement through Congressional "war powers" resolutions, giving the President broad discretion to fight wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Those resolutions do not cover war with Iran. The House and Senate must reassert their power to make and NOT MAKE war!

Speak truth to power —
