MEETING NEWS

PARKING & LOGISTICS AT GMM THIS SUNDAY

1)   The big graduation tent is in the Commons

Where to park on Sunday, June 8 for Meeting for Worship & Meeting for Business?

  • As always there is plenty of street parking on Sundays.
  • The parking lot behind the Science Building across Coulter Street should be open.
  • For those who need to be closer, the new, small GFS parking lot on Greene Street, in front of the Loeb Theater will be open for GMM on Sunday. It has space for approximately 10 cars, and you can then walk to the Meetinghouse via the path next to the Cottage.

2)  A Memorial for a GFS teacher will be happening in the big tent on Sunday at 12:00noon

We are asking everyone to exit via the meetinghouse/Committee Room doors on the graveyard side, and be mindful of chatter outside the meetinghouse, so we do not disrupt the memorial service, which may still be underway after Refreshments. Many thanks. ♥️

INTERFAITH PEACE WALK GATHERING AT GMM

When?  Sunday, June 8, 2:00- 4:30pm

Where? Germantown Meetinghouse

The Philadelphia Interfaith Peace Walk, which has been hosted a couple of times at by Germantown Friends Meeting, is inviting us to participate in a very special event at our meeting house on June 8 from 2:00 - 4:30 p.m. With representatives from many faith backgrounds, the event will address the challenging times we are experiencing as a nation, including the current frontal attack on our democracy and the nation’s continuing support of the destruction of Gaza.  In addition to hearing inspiring speakers we will be able to share together in Listening Circles the impact of these times upon ourselves and communities —and consider potential actions.

NOTE: This event is not an actual “walk,” but rather a gathering with speakers, listening circles & music.

GMM FUNDRAISING REMINDER

It is still possible for all of us to make a charitable donation to Germantown Meeting before June 30, the end of our fiscal year. Many thanks to all who have given already.

It takes all of us to support our beloved Germantown Meeting community – caring for our meetinghouse, assisting our members, championing the causes we care about. ♥️  And remember – The number of folks participating in our annual giving campaign is equally important as the amount raised. Gifts of truly any size are helpful & welcomed!

Want to make a donation, but haven’t gotten around to it?

  • Send a check (to Germantown Monthly Meeting) - 47 W Coulter Street, Philadelphia, PA 19144
  • Give online through Philadelphia Yearly Meeting: Online Giving
  • Drop a donation into the wall-mounted donation box in the Social Room when you’re at Meeting (if you would like it credited to you, please clip a note with your name to your donation)

Many thanks!

SWARTHMORE LECTURE: A TESTIMONY OF COMMUNITY

Emily Provance, a full-time traveling Friend from 15th Street Meeting in NYC, gave this talk at Britain Yearly Meeting in late May this year. Thanks to a GMM member who shared it, seeing it as valuable for helping to discern the best way forward on issues within community.

Emily engaged with the challenge of how people can live and cooperate in community, especially when those communities are not ones that we have chosen. Emily presented a testimony of community drawn from books of discipline used across Friends’ theological spectrum and in many parts of our global community. In her lecture Emily  offered  a “sense of the meeting,” using the collective wisdom of our immensely diverse Society to suggest how all people—Quaker and not—can survive and thrive as an immensely diverse humankind.
