Please maintain silence as you enter the Zoom meeting or the meetinghouse so Friends can center and settle into worship.

Our current COVID-19 safety measures for the meetinghouse are as follows:

  • Masks are optional. Feel free to wear one if you wish. We have a supply if you’ve forgotten yours.
  • If you have a fever or are feeling unwell, please stay home and join our worship on Zoom.

QUAKER VOLUNTARY SERVICE (QVS) IS VISITING GMM AGAIN!  

Come to Meeting this Sunday, January 19th, to worship with the five Philadelphia QVS Fellows, and welcome them warmly afterwards during Refreshments!

GMM CHILDREN WILL GATHER TO MAKE SCARVES & HATS THIS SUNDAY!

This Sunday, January 19th, we have a special event for all children at Meeting!

In preparation for a big Martin Luther King Day of service with GFS on Monday, 1/20, we will work together this Sunday on making hats, scarves and neck warmers for distribution to families in need of warm winter clothing.

(Note: Children of any age are always welcome to stay with their parents in meeting for worship.)

A PATH CONNECTION – ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS COMMITTEE RETURNS!

Germantown Monthly Meeting is reinvigorating its Environmental Concerns Committee, last active in the pre-pandemic era. Instigators Bill Cozzens and Jack Rhoads anticipate that the committee will focus on climate and energy issues and solutions but that does not preclude responding to other environmental concerns. The Prospectus describes some possible areas the Committee can work on. We are planning a kickoff meeting in the next several weeks - stay tuned!

UPCOMING “QUAKERISM 101” CLASSES - SAVE THE DATES!

Worship and Ministry, is offering two "Quakerism 101" classes in February and March 23.  

There will be childcare on-site and a hybrid option for these sessions. All are welcome!

Germantown Monthly Meeting members who have children in Friends Schools may apply for tuition assistance from the Meeting for the 2025-2026 school year.  Applications should be completed and returned to Faye Steacy, clerk of the Scholarship Committee, by Monday, January 27. MLK DAY OF SERVICE - MAKE IT A DAY ON, NOT A DAY OFF - at GFS

When? This coming Monday, January 20, 8:30am - 1pm

All are invited to join the GFS Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service as we honor and celebrate his life and legacy. As a day on, rather than a day off, we will kick off with keynote speaker Kenneth Salaam (aka Freedom Smitty), followed by a full morning of workshops and volunteer opportunities, including snacks and lunch.

Great way to give to the community, and partner with Germantown Friends School!

PEOPLE’S MARCH (formerly Women’s March) IN PHILADELPHIA!

Along with other cities across the country, Philadelphia will be the site of another annual Women’s March, now called the  “People’s March.”

When?  Tomorrow –Saturday, January 18, 2025; 10:00am - 3:00pm

Where? Starting at City Hall at 10am to listen to performances/speeches, then march up to the Art Museum.

“We all march for different reasons, but we march for the same cause: to defend our rights and our future.”

TECHNOLOGY DISCUSSION GROUP

When?   Monthly starting Saturday, January 18, 2025 at 2 pm

Where? Seth Dunoff’s apartment on Greene Street in Germantown

What?   GMM attender Seth Dunoff will host the first meeting of a new monthly reading / discussion group on the subject of technology on January 18. The reading for the first meeting is farmer / author Gene Logsdon’s 1986 essay “Green Fields, Red Ink”, about the economics of American agriculture, from his book At Nature’s Pace.

The purpose of the project is to begin to formalize an anti-technology political movement.

CEREMONY VIGIL TO HONOR MLK'S LIFE & EXAMPLE, JANUARY 2O

Instead of listening to the troubling rhetoric likely to be featured at Monday's inaugural events, why not join others in lifting up the life and example of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.? Gather with folks from the Brandywine Peace Community at Lockheed Martin, the world's #1 war profiteer and nuclear weapons contractor, to remember King's birthday, his lessons of nonviolent protest, and what it would mean to build a beloved community of dignity, justice, and peace on this earth.

When? Monday, January 20, 2:00pm

Where? At the entrance to Lockheed Martin's headquarters, 230 Mall Blvd in King of Prussia (behind King of Prussia Mall). There will be a banner and poster display, bell tolling, readings from Dr. King, and a group litany. The Brandywine Peace Community, directed & co-founded by GMM member Robert M. NICHOLSON CHURCH LANE GARDEN – SELECTED FOR UPGRADES!

The Nicholson Church Lane Community Garden, named for our members Chris and Helen Nicholson, has been selected by the Neighborhood Gardens Trust for an extensive upgrade in terracing and accessibility! The garden is hoping to help raise the necessary funds by February 1st, if possible.

Where is it? This garden is located just three blocks from our Meeting, at the corner of Church Lane and Baynton Streets.
